The Hobbit on the cheap: In search of Bolg

Hi, It's time for another post in the "The Hobbit on the cheap" series! This time we will take a closer look at some of the miniatures needed for the recreating of the nice skirmishes fought in "The Hobbit" without having to spend too much money on miniatures as this is afterall a skirmish game. First of all we take a look at finding a suitable Bolg, the savage Orc Leader!

Option one: Games Workshop: Finecast Bolg - The first opion is the Games Workshop resin Bolg which retails for a massive €20.00! Bolg is described the as the following: "Orc holds and Goblin haunts throughout the Misty Mountains are in Bolg's thrall. Bolg is hulking, finely detailed model with metal gauntlets and shoulder pads over which finger-like bone detailing can be seen. His muscular frame is garbed in chainmail, fur detailing, thick boots, and he carries three weapons - two swords and a two-handed pick which is held aloft, ready to smash against his enemies."  I haven't bought any of the resin cast miniatures but I heard some bad stories about their strength and their details so instead I prefer to buy the old metal characters when I need some. Next to this issue we also have the high price.

Option two: Reaper Bones: Ogre Chieftain - The second option for our Orc Leader is the nice Reaper Bones Ogre Chieftain which was part of the initial Bones range when it was introduced. For those wondering what's the Reaper Bones range: this range exists out of already existing miniatures from Reaper but with miniatures casted in plastic to allow better pricing and I mean seriously better pricing! This massive miniature only costs you £1.80 from the UK retailler Miniature Heroes. In the picture borrowed from the Reaper website you can see this fine miniature painted by "Adrif". And as you can see an excellent miniature and replacement for the Games Workshop version and at much better prices. With the price of one GW Bolg you can buy around 8 Ogre Chieftains enough to start a horde!

Option three: Otherworld Miniatures: Ogre Chieftain - Another nice option is produced by Otherworld Miniatures. A small scale company which is cranking out excellent fantasy sculpts sculpted by some of the best fantasy sculptors in the business! Their option is also called the ogre chieftain and is really one of the best looking option I have found online as it is both looking old school but modern enough to be mixed in your existing army. This fellow is based on a 40mm plastic base to give you an idea of his size. I just love his facial expression and his awesome mace and armour. He's just not over the top as the GW model which is cladded with spikes and skulls. This great full-metal miniature retails for £12.00 which is still cheaper than the GW finecast option.

Of course more options and alternatives are widely available from all sorts of different manufacturers but these are my top two alternatives. As you can see you can quite easily refight The Hobbit for a modest budget! Not sure which will be the content of the next post of this series but I'm sure it will save you some more pennies in the progress!
